Never heard of that name before, but here are the impressions I get: The "geg" sound in the name makes me think of North Africa, and "butti" makes me think of Italy!.

Maybe it could be from Sicily or a short hop across the water in Tunisia!? Or maybe somewhere in Southern Spain (i!.e!. Moorish influence)!?

EDIT: After reading Cognitive Dissident's comment about Ray Buttigieg, I think your surname is Maltese!. I looked-up "Maltese" on wikipedia and found an entry on the language, and it says:

"Maltese is generally accepted to be descended from Siculo-Arabic, the Arabic dialects that developed in Sicily and the rest of Southern Italy!.!.!.a few sources also claim it was from Tunisian or Maghrebi Arabic, with substantial borrowing from other languages such as Sicilian and Italian!.!.!."

England may only come into the picture because Malta was part of the British Empire from 1814 to 1964!.

There definitely are very few of you!. Emma Buttigeg lived in Texas in 1920, and she was a widow from Germany!. Remember, this is not her maiden name!. Paul came to the US in 1935, and traveled from England!. The trick is finding his father's place of birth, which is not showing from US records that I have access to!. I see one living person in phone listings!.!. but being a woman, her last name is not going to show her origin unless that is her maiden name and not a married name!.
Somewhere, there WILL be valid documents regarding the male line and their place of birth!.!. I am not able to pick them up (some might be in England, others might be confidential)!.
Based on Emma!.!. I would guess German (and that it could be an error in spelling)!.!. but that is only an educated guess!. I normal choke up at the word "guessing" since I always advise using valid records!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
