Question: Need a map of businesses in Vienna around 1840's!?
My grandmother has told me that her great grandfather owned a silk factory in Vienna around 1845 or so!. She says her grandmother said Johanne Strauss conducted his orchestra in their living room---hard to believe!.

The story was that he and his friends made some sort of attempt to remove Franz Joseph, failed and he was spirited out of the country and came to America!. His wife and 2 daughters followed him a few months later!. He later disappeared from a NYC hotel room where his wallet and personal effects were discovered!.

I've always found the story rather impossible to believe but my gram has never lied before and has been telling this tale for 90 of her 96 years!. The family name on that side would be Ziegler (spelling may vary)!.

If he owned a silk factory that seems like something I could verify!. Not speaking German is proving a bit of a handicap!. Any ideas where I could find a listing of businesses during that time!? Thanks, it would be great to give my gram this info!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi, what a fascinating story! And a tough one to prove or disprove!

Wendy C!. is absolutely right, she knows her stuff! Going from your grandmother, back to her parents, then to their parents, etc!., you will likely find out more information that will help you research the Vienna businesses from 1845!.

If you want to head right into searching Vienna records!.!.!.

I did find an actual map of Vienna online, from the year 1833!. It shows streets and even the facades of several buildings in the city!. Here's the link: http://www!.davidrumsey!.com/maps3616!.html

I also found from the FamilySearch!.org, the Mormon genealogy site, that they have a long list of Vienna records available by microfilm!. You can request to borrow them through your local Family History Center!. Here's the link where I found Vienna microfilm information:

http://www!.familysearch!.org/Eng/Library/!.!.!.

Here's the list of what is available:

Judging just by the titles of these microfilm rolls, it sounds like the "Occupations" rolls might be worth your while, at a minimum! Personal Names, Land and Maps sound like possibilities, too!. (Note: you can request multiple rolls at one time, and it takes a week or two for your local Center to get them)!.

And finally, you might consider asking a German speaker to help you for a few hours, so you don't accidentally miss the right record! I'm sure there are volunteers or people for hire in Vienna to research onsite, or at least you could take a German speaker with you to the Family History Center for their translation assistance!.

Best of luck, I hope you can prove the story is real!Www@QuestionHome@Com

For the moment, I have no leads to the Vienna end!.
What IS possible would be finding your family in the census, establishing when they immigrated, and in many cases!.!. you possibly can find the immigration record itself, for the wife and 2 daughters!. DEPENDING on the timing!.!. you may even find him in a census record prior to his disappearing!.
Work with what you have, and build!.!. ie, grandma is 96, so she was born 1912!.!. thus she should be findable in both 1920 and 1930 census with parent(s)!.
If you can post her birth name and approx date!.!. that is a start!. Solidify details from this end, and it may surprise you at the 'other' end!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
