Question: Scottish plaids/tartans!?

If you have several scottish ancestors consisting of different clans, which clan plaid should you choose to wear!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Clan system is essentially patrilineal!. Therefore, if your surname is associated with a Clan you should probably choose that one!. If not, find the "closest" one and join!. If your ancestry happens to be 100% Scottish, then just pick one!. Of course anyone can buy tartans but no one is an actual member of a Clan unless one joins!. Just note though, that some Clan associations will not accept members unless there pedigree has a patrilineal kinship!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Feel free to wear any tartan from your ancestry!. After all, the idea of particular clansmen wearing particular tartans didn't arise until the mid-19th century when the Prince of Wales, aided and abetted by Sir Walter Scott and the Lowland citizens of Edinburgh, discovered "romantic Scotland" and went mad about the plaid (to use the American term for such patterns)!. Before the wearing of the kilt and tartans was outlawed after the battle of Culloden in 1746, Highlander Scots wore whatever tartan they wished, rather than a particular tartan associated with their clan!.

In the United States and Canada (and I'll be the first to admit that I don't know about Scotland), clans canvas for new members at Highland festivals, and they're certainly not adverse to registering those who belong to more than one clan association!. For instance, I'm a card-carrying member of the Texas chapter of the Donald Society (for Macdonalds), the Macquarrie Clan, and the Henderson Clan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wonder the same thing!.!.!.!. I have 3 different clans in my heritage!. I guess I'd wear the one that is closest to your relation, or the one you like the best!. I like some of the colors of some tartans better than others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
