I live right on the border and in order for a parent to cross into Canada with their child, we need not only our kids' birth certificates but also a notarized letter from the other parent certifying that we have permission to remove our child from the country!. This is true even to chaperone a field trip to the Shakespeare festival in Stratford or when we went to Acapulco for vacation!. If you are a single parent with sole custody, take a certified copy of your custody paperwork!.

The problem isn't with the US, it's with the country you're trying to enter!. They don't want to become part of a messy international custody battle, so they want proof when you cross the border that the other parent agrees with the trip!. Some border guards are pickier than others!. The farther you are from a metro area, the worse they get!. In Sault Ste Marie Ontario, they scrutinize everything!. Detroit/Windsor is just asking for the letter and proper ID for the child!.

As for your name change, the trail is going to be documented on computer!. Your maiden name is there already when they scan your passport and your records pop up!. As long as you have his birth certificate with your maiden name on there, it will match up!. The smart thing to do is to get him his own passport so that your passport is permanently linked to his!. Then if there's a question, the State Department will have everything on the computer for them to look at without causing any problem at the border!.

They're getting stricter and stricter on border crossings period!. Soon we're even going to need a passport to just cross the Detroit river for a night at the casino in Windsor!. When it comes to the kids, they're a lot happier when all the paperwork is together and both parents listed on the birth certificate are present!. If you're traveling without his dad, just double check on the most recent rules before you leave home!.!.!.they're changing every year!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

my friend is the father who supposedly abducted his daughter from the Czech republic!.
from what he has told me the more evidence that you have to prove that you are or have permission to travel abroad with a child the better!!!
had he held a signed letter from the mother he would not lost his daughter in the Sydney court via the Hague convention yesterdayWww@QuestionHome@Com

It can't hurt to have a copy of his birth certificate with you!. I'm not sure what the current rules are, but in the past, parents must show a child's birth certificate in order to take underage children out of the country!. You can call one of the airlines to find out if this is still the case!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The age of the child may have a bearing on whether you are allowed or not, you could be a kidnapper !Www@QuestionHome@Com
