Start by using factual information!.
Anything about rights to castles is garbage, urban legends, bull, however you want to define it!. There are certain genealogy fantasies all over, that have NO BASIS, but people believe them because they sound good!.
Your nationality is where you were born, your HERITAGE is where your ancestors came from!. Yes, it will be important to know the distinction!. DO NOT WASTE your energy on where your surname SUPPOSEDLY comes from!. If your father was born in Denmark, that is factual!. The next step is where his parents were born/ lived!.
Start fresh with your concept and thinking!.!. the reliable way is always always always to use valid records and documents!. Each person in your ancestry is a unique person, and you don't need to worry about terminology to describe yourself!. Starting with your father!.!. sit down and determine WHAT RECORD do you have, concerning him!. IE, his birth certificate, or other document!. If he migrated to the US from Denmark, you want that record!. You want the same for mom!. You will next want any documentation regarding each of the grandparents!. Don't skip!.!. get the records, then build on those records to find the next set/ generation!.
You got sidetracked by false information about a surname and a castle!. Trust me!.!. if you had rights to a castle anywhere, you'd have the deed to prove it!. You would also have records to prove your grandfather (or other male ancestor on dad's side) was actually born in Scotland!.
As long as you work with documents, there is nothing to "figure out" or guess!. It's all right there and proven, if done correctly!.
edit-
most persons advise to ask questions of your relatives!. This is fine!.!. AS LONG AS you understand that they may be passing on traditions or stories that are unproven!. If someone gives you a unsubstantiated story to begin with, you can spend years chasing a story that had no facts to begin with!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you want to know your heritage you will have to do the research, starting with yourself and going back!. Be sure to ask your parents and grandparents lots of questions,

You heritage is no more or less messed up than most people looking for help here or researching online--many Americans have immigrant ancestors from many countries!.

Good luck and have fun!.

By the way, Hitler was Austrian!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your half german/half danish!. Last names can be from any country and anyone can have them!. Maybe your danish ancestors decided to change there last name to make it sound more english when they came to this country, and it happened to be scottish!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
