specifically for that purpose alone, no!.!.!. I am not aware of any!. It is cool that someone has figured out that their family does not automatically have a coat of arms!.!. we constantly struggle to explain the valid reasons on that!.
I did just download gimp (cute name, huh!?!? lol) which is similiar to photoshop !.!. but seems to be an extensive open source/ free program!. It may do for your purposes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First off, coat of arms are inherited!. If a male in your family was granted a coat of arms, then it passes down from father to son etc!. I found this on the internet:
Coat of Arms Information
Q!. Do coats of arms belong to surnames!?
A!. No!. There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname'!. Many people of the same surname will often be entitled to completely different coats of arms, and many of that surname will be entitled to no coat of arms!. Coats of arms belong to individuals!. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must either have had it granted to them or be descended in the legitimate male line from a person to whom arms were granted or confirmed in the past!.1
Q!. What are the pantone numbers for the colours used in heraldry!?
A!. There are no fixed shades for heraldic colours!. If the official description of a coat of arms gives its tinctures as Gules (red), Azure (blue) and Argent (white or silver) then, as long as the blue is not too light and the red not too orange, purple or pink, it is up to the artist to decide which particular shades they think are appropriate!.1
Q!. What is a crest!?
A!. It is a popular misconception that the word 'crest' describes a whole coat of arms or any heraldic device!. It does not!. A crest is a specific part of a full achievement of arms: the three-dimensional object placed on top of the helm!.1

Actually coats of arms were granted to individuals and are passed down through the direct legitimate male line of descent!.
They don't belong to surnames!. Unfortunately the peddlers that sell them on the internet, at airports, at shopping malls, in magazines or solicit by mail sell them like they belong to surnames and that is not valid!.

If this is a school project, please print off the links below and give them to your teacher!. One is from the British College of Arms(they grant coats of arms) and the other from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U!.S!., The National Genealogical Society!.

Whenever you see someone displaying one of those walnut plaques on their den wall with a coat of arms and family history on it, or maybe a keychain, or coffee mug, or Tshirt, what they are displaying is a coat of arms that was granted to someone with their surname and might not even be related!.

Of course, courtesy means we don't laugh at people in their own homes, but no doubt anyone who knows anything about genealogy or heraldry is amused when they see one of those things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are a couple hundred decent sites out there for you to create your own coat of arms!. And it's completely legitimate for you to do so because you're not claiming anyone else's as your own!. The heraldry folks do NOT frown on people creating something new!. In fact, they register new ones created by families all the time!.

Here's a site that I use for kids when I teach genealogy classes in schools!. It's pretty easy to use, though there are really great ones out there if you Google "free heraldry software"!. http://www!.4crests!.com/desyourownco1!.htm!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
