England is populated by the Anglo-Saxons (people from Northern Germany), would that make most white people living in the US of German descent!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes, I believe that the majority of immigrants to the US, as well as Canada, were German or descended from German!. the US around the signing of the Declaration of Independence voted on the language of their new country and it was a toss up between German and English!. Obviously English won, but not by much!.!.!.I'm not sure, but I think English won out by one or two votes!. I'm sure if you researched a bit you could find out the particulars of the choosing of the official language of the US!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The influx of ancesters varied from year to year!! Depending on the popularity of the United States during the years!. You are probably right about the various numbers over all from Europe and around the world!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would think that but do not have any statistics!. also I would say that most would be descended from the Northern Germanic peoples which includes more than Northern Germany!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were certainly a lot of Germans who settled here in Minnesota!. My aunt, who was born in 1929, did not speak English until kindergarten, and she was second generation American!. The 1870 and 1880 census for here is filled with people born in Germany, Bavaria, and Prussia, Prussia, Prussia!.
Minnesota is thought of a Scandinavian settlement state ( Ya sure, you betcha) but there were even more of Germanic origin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. You are forgetting that original British Isles tribes were there before the last ice age; after that, there was the influx of Jutes, Anglos, Saxons, Celts and many other tribes!. A large percentage of British people have Viking blood as well; then there was the invasion by France in 1066 and other times; invasion of the British Isles by the Netherlanders, Spain, etc!.
As to where U!.S!. folks came from, the Number one country of origin was Italy; Number 2 Ireland; Number 3 was Germany!. Of course, if they include all the illegals, it would probably be Mexico!.
But back to your premise; the Germanic tribes came from the Baltic Sea area!.!.!.!.

> England is populated by the Anglo-Saxons

Sort of!. The Picts and Celts came over first, probably!. If someone was there before that they didn't leave any records or bones that have been found yet!. The Romans came in, then Angles, Jutes and Saxons, Vikings and Normans!.

They all intermarried, eventually!. Calling the Anglo-Saxons "Germanic" is a stretch; when do you become "English"!?

If you go back far enough, we're all either Africans (Science) or whatever nation had the Garden of Eden (Bible) or something else, depending on which story of creation you believe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ted has explained it well!. One thing, Germany didn't exist as a nation until the latter part of the 19th century!. People of most national origins which include Germans are not pure by a long shot, due to invasions, boundary changes, etc!.

You have to also consider that the Frankish Kingdom was comprised mostly today of what is Germany and France!.

England being out in the Atlantic has had a myriad of people immigrating to or invading their shores!. That is why the English language is so mongrelized so to speak!. You frequently have one word that can mean something entirely different according to how it is used and then several words for the same thing, even though some people might put a different semantic on some of them, like road, street, avenue, lane etc!.

The syntax in English drives non English speaking people crazy!. Maria VonTrapp(portrayed in Sound of Music) said when she first learned English, she couldn't understand why if we said mouse and mice we didn't say house and hice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Highly unlikely!.

I would think the largest population in the U!.S!. would be ancestors from Scotland, Ireland, England and perhaps Wales!. As the immigrants from the 1740s thru the early 1900s mainly came from those areas!. Germanic heritage and Scandinavian heritage came in smaller numbers!.

And Ted's response is far from correct!. If you really believe the Bible, everyone except Noah and his family were destroyed by the flood and so only a few remnants from the Garden of Eden existed; and do we know if any of their children procreated!? No, we know very little of that period of time or even if it existed!.

The last true German to rule England was Queen Victoria; and her husband was also of German background; hence up until George VI most of the blood in the royal family was germanic in nature; QEII's mother was british and of course Princess Diana's family was one of the oldest of British Royal Famlies, the Spencers dating back over 900 years; far older than the upstart Windsors (who took their name from their Castle)!. However, only the Royal Family is of German/Macedonian heritage; the majority of their subjects are British thru and thru!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
