Census records indicate the race of a person Now, some have said the census taker sometimes guessed at it. For instance, if they were taking a census of a white person that had a better tan than he had ever seen, perhaps in his own small community, he might put them down as mulatto. Then some who were part of the African American community might be very light in complexion and if they didn't know the person they might have confused them.

You have to understand that many so called African Americans have some white ancestry.

Also, there is absolute no such thing as a white person. If so, they would be garish looking. So called White or Caucasians come in various skin pigmentations. Some are lighter and some are darker. If a census taker came from small area where he did not see other caucasian who got a good sun tan, he might think when he did see one that they are mulatto.

DNA test. Oprah Winfrey did her DNA test, and I think it shows that her ancestors are from Tanzania.

yes it is possible. contact your local university genetics department and ask for a DNA test(it will probably cost around $100) they can trace your mitochondrial DNA back over 10,000 years and tell you what regions your ancestored came from.

Can you look yourself in the mirror and find out?

Census records say the race of the person.
