You should have 8 surnames among your great grandparents, but with Missouri and Arkansas, you never know. Four to six, maybe. In some of the smaller counties you either marry a cousin or have to go all the way to St. Louis to find a spouse. That's a long way to go, when the crops need tending.

Ignore the ad at the top and try "Jewel" too, if you look.

has no people whose LR was Oregon county but 98 whose LR was MO. You might my search repeat with the counties tha surround Oregon Co. Don't forget the ones across the state line.

have just one family named Jewell in the county in 1880. There is a chance he is your ancestor, but the lack of SSDI entries is troubling.

Note that it was spelled it with one "L" here. If you are lucky, you may find a document with it spelled both ways for the same person on the same document. I have one such for a fellow named Matthews. It spells his surname "Matthews", "Mathews" and "Marthis" in different paragraphs.
