Question:My father was adopted in the late 1940's in Yonkers, NY through a closed adoption. His adopting father died in 1983, my father died in 1989 and his adopting mother died in 2002. We had no interaction with his adopting parents because they didn't like my mother and family because she was a Christian. All throughout the years we didn't have any connection to them. Since 2002 I have wanted to find out who my father's natural/birth mother and/or father is. What I want to know is how can I get that information since it was a closed adoption? Am I entitled to get that information about my birth grandparents on my father's side? Please help me in anyway you can. I am 20 years old and I just want to connect with my grandparents if they are still alive. Even if they are dead I want to get my family history. Thank you.

You are very lucky that he was adopted in New York.

New York has a lot of resources for adoptees and their families.

The health dept. of the state has a registry that will match family members if any one has registered. Perhaps a sibling of his was aware of his birth and has already registered.

You can also petition the courts.

http://www.courts.state.ny.us/forms/fami...

your section begins at Form 16-A

Also, do a google search for an intelligent adoption forum, and not a place with a bunch of nay sayers or whiners. Find one with people who have been there, done that and are willing to show you how.

You'd have to go through the courts, from what I know. Call a lawyer.

Its going to be really hard finding out the information require without getting Legal help on these sort of closed adoptions,
Most times in ordinary adoptions you can go to the Salvation Army for help BUT in your case seek Legal advice first & good luck I hope you find them one way or another..
