Most geneologists block living family members from showing up on their sites. You really need a family member to give you as much information as possible, names, birth & death dates, marriages, maiden names, brothers & sisters. The more information you have to start with theeasier it will be. Having said that, I am including links to some of the free sites that I have found useful. I have also just typed in the first & last name, in quotes, of a person I am looking for plus the state if I know it, in my Yahoo! search bar. Your family name can show up in different state histories and records.

Good Luck

Access Geneology has good resources for Native American & African American
research as well as census records, military records and family bibles.

Don't be afraid to get in to some of the geneology forums for your family name. Sometimes that can be very helpful as well.

Try the Mormon genealogy site, you might find something there.

Tread lightly...If you find anything out that would pi$$ people off...For goodness sakes DON"T SHARE IT.

This is the same situation that caused hate in my family. A baby was born before "I Do" was said and that knowlege cost my family DEARLY. My mother (who was doing the searching) mentioned it to my grandparents and they didn't speak to her for 15 years. It took my grandfather being on his deathbed to even get him to look at her.

Be careful of the skeletons you may dig up. They can bite you in the a$$.

One of the best places to start is the Latter Day Saints site, FamilySearch.org it is free and they have a huge database. Another place to check is RootsWeb.com. Some info there is free. Often libraries have subscriptions to the major genealogical sites. I consider Ancestry.com to be one of the best sites but it does require a membership and fee. Your choice of search tool also depends on what country or counties your relatives came from. A source to see the extent of genealogy sites available is Cyndi's List. There are sites out there that will help you search for relatives some fee based, some not, but be advised, not all "FREE SEARCHES" are really free - or should I say the search is free but the results aren't.
Finally, adoption records and recent records (e.g. 1930's and newer) are very difficult to access due to privacy laws.
Don't start looking "empty handed" get as much family info as you can names, dates and places.
Good Luck.
