You could try www.family search.org its completely free to use.

If you know where they live then you can check the local county records division usually called "vital statistics" They should have a link on their website. The other option is check the local papers for an OBIT.

go to the city ,then find a funeral home near where you thought your friends' were. i found someone in another city by pulling up the newspapers archives.smaller cities may not have the best websites ,but you could write family in those areas and ask for a forwarding address. their familiy may let you know whether they've past or give forwarding address.

If they had a social security number (which you don't need to know) then you might be able to find them in the Social Security Death Index. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com and look for a link to the Social Security Death Index.
