Position:Home>Genealogy> Are there still any people in germany or austria with the surname Hitler ?

Question:www.familysearch.org--Austria listings:
Ancestral File - 12
? IGI/Continental Europe - over 25 (could be 26 or up to 2,000)
? Pedigree Resource File - over 25 (same as above)--of course, there could be repeats from different people submitting information.

Germany listings:
Ancestral File - over 25
? Census/1880 US Census - 15
? IGI/Germany - over 25
? Pedigree Resource File - over 25

Spelling variations: HETTLER , HETLER , HATLER, HITLER , HITTLER ,& HIELDLER .
The earliest listing they have, after counting back a few generations, is Aberline Hettler --Birth: abt 1520 Wuerttemburg, Germany .

The name HETTLER means:
1. occupational name for a goatherd, from an agent derivative of the dialect word "Hettel" ‘goat’.
2. North German: nickname for a hateful or belligerent person, from Middle Low German "heteler" ‘"hater’, ‘enemy"
(Adolf sure picked out a good last name!!)’.

yes

probably yes

Yes there are. And not only in the German-speaking world. I once saw campaign posters for an election in Mexico that was contested by a Jose Hitler.

Apparently very few - most people who had that surname, either changed it completely, or went by a variation of it, eg. Heidler. I read recently that there hasn't been anyone christened Adolf in Germany in more than 50 years.

I am not sure about Germany or Austria, but I served in the Marine Corps with a Hitler.

Yes, but alot of them from Germany/Austria go by another name.

I'm sure that there are, but they've probably done their best to change their names or somehow hide their identities since the dictator's downfall.
