Question:UK - you can change your name as you like so ong as it is not done to defraud or for criminal reasons.
You need a Deed Poll to enable the law to associate anything relating to your old name to you!
i.e. If your great uncle Charlie has made a Will leaving all his money to Frederick Bloggs and you are now calling yourself Frederick Blaggs there would need to be some proof of a change of name. The same may apply for mortgages and insurance policies. That is what the deed poll is for. If nothing like this is ever likely to apply you don't need a deed poll.

i'd say that you do need to make it legal, coz you'd need to change it in your passport and drivers license etc... best way to find out is to call and ask.

I aggree. Call and ask. Check online. But why do you want to change the spelling of your surname? It doesn't sound right or something? I don't think you'd have to pay to get it changed. They might have to change your birth certificate and stuff, or they might not. If you're made pay a fee, that wouldn't be fair. I wouldn't do it if they require a large fee.

If your in the US go to a lawyer and have it done. It's not that hard to do. I've heard of people doing this and it does'nt cost that much depends on the lawyer. And you'll need new ID.

If you're in the UK it can be done at the register office for £40:00 no need for a solicitor any more.
