There were two people who were naturalized in the Eastern District of NY ... The database doesn't give further information, so, you would need to follow through by writing NY. Source for info. below is - http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/naturali...

To request info from the Eastern District Court, go to: http://www.italiangen.org/EDN.stm
http://www.italiangen.org/Naturalization... (There seems to be a $15 fee.)

Gilbert Isaac 1916(Year) 59(Petition Volume) 14457(Petition Number)

Gilbert Issac 1941(year) 1099(Petition Volume) 303120(Petition Number)

The 1920 U.S. Census states that he acquired citizenship in 1912 and arrived in 1900. So, the 1916 one above could be the one you are looking for. In 1930 it states they arrived in 1903 and there is no year for the naturalization.

I did find an Isak GELBERT from Bialystok, Russia (now Poland) - watchmaker - age 19 who arrived in 1903 and went to an uncle named Sam Berlin. This does not quite meet the birth year you gave us, though.

I have tried searching at ancestry.com for you. There are a variety of people with similar names/spellings. Can you elaborate just a bit more, please?

I can't check any further without knowing another detail or two. Some possible wifes' names that I found associated with a person w/ the versions of the names you gave us were Dora (Pennsylvania) and Sarah (NY).

For example, if you know his wife's first name and/or the state he lived in that would narrow this down for those wanting to assist you.

If he lived in New York, you can check at the following online site, http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/naturali...

Although the U.S. Census would give the year of citizenship/process, the year is based on who is doing the reporting and that isn't always accurate. Since this person arrived prior to 1906, there may be no notations on his ship manifest. This is another way of finding out the location, year and application number for citizenship.

For more details on the numbers you would find on the ship's manifest, go to: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manif...

The first number would be the district and the meaning of the first number changed three times. So, you would need to scroll down to the area titled "District Key Number Tables" and click on the one that coordinates with the year of the ship manifest. But, it appears that folks arriving prior to 1906 might not have these details on their manifest entry.

If he lived in NYC when he was naturalized, the record you want is on file at the National Archives and Records Administration center in Greenwich Village. You don't have to search hard and you don't have to find reams of info. You just fill out the request for the form and provide the information you have. Just send the request to them and they'll pull it, copy it and send it to you. Here's the link you need: http://www.archives.gov/northeast/

If you live near NYC, you can go in person. It's a wonderful time spending a day at a NARA center.
