Position:Home>Genealogy> What is the origin of singer Joan Armatrading's last name?

Question:Could be a stage name. Although she's a Brit, those islands have a lot of interaction amongst the Dutch, French, and British, hence, it could be a corruption of Dutch or French origin.

You could ask her yourself--- http://www.joanarmatrading.com/index.asp...

clueless her...African?

sound like a slave or surf name origination most names are

she is from st.kitts ,british west indies so i suppose that would indicate that her family geneology is linked to the slave trade and often those surnames came from a combination of things

This is a strange one. There are no real records of this name apart from associations to Joan, whose music, incidentally I love! I know she comes from St Kitts (Nevis) which are small Caribbean islands. A lot of slaves took their masters' names but in this case it does not seem to be the case.
A real puzzle. Perhaps the name was made up?
it seems to be a very specific surname, and there is only one other person with it:Tony Armatrading and a road inTexas!
