The 1840 US census has Slifer families in MD, PA, OH, IN and VA. By 1880, the families have spread across the USA but are still heaviest in PA, OH, IN and IL. It's most likely the name is from western Germany, perhaps one of the "Pennsylvania Dutch." The surname doesn't appear in the UK 1891 census index.
