1) rootsweb.com
My favorite area to search is on the left-hand side of the page; under "Family Trees (World Connect)" click "Search Family Trees" and enter info. This will search other peoples' work, so it needs to be verified, but it's a good place to start.
2) cemetery records
Two good pages--internment.net and findagrave.com--are listed below. On findagrave, the left side involves celebrity gravesites, but the right side is helpful for searching general cemetery listings. On internment, it helps to click the country, then state/region, then search for the name to narrow down the results.
3) check state or county office web pages. West Viriginia, for example, has an awesome collection of birth, marriage, death certificates with scanned images of the original files.
4) google a person's name. I found an obituary for an ancestor who moved to Texas and died in 1913, just by putting his name in quotes in a google search.
Google is also good for finding individual county historical societies, family-specific web pages, etc.

It Very HARD TO get a free geneology site
