since some people are being smart alecs, and im bored i will answer, kinda. i think it's like 150 bucks max.

Depends. At a minimum, there will be the cost of filing a court action; ask the court clerk. In some jurisdictions, you have to publish a legal notice in a newspaper, and that will increase the cost. The total tab shouldn't be more than a few hundred dollars.

why would you want too?

You need to find out the exact fees from your county's court. Normally it is only a couple of hundred dollars to file the petition. But, it may be less in some places.

Like, I live in California and my court's Webpage gives directions and forms of how to do this.

My husband actually legally changed his first name here in Florida (fees are the same no matter which name you change). Granted, the fees in different states will likely vary, but here in Florida it only cost him a $94 filing fee with the courts to file the paper (which he obtained from the court.....no lawyer involved); then he had to show up in court on his scheduled court date to see the judge; then walked out with an official, court certified, signed by the judge, piece of paper stating his name change and that it was court ordered.

So far.........$94.

Then, he had to take that piece of paper to his bank to get his accounts changed; to DMV to get his license changed; to the social security office to get his name changed on his social security card; to his job; send a copy of it to all his creditors (credit cards, mortgage, etc).

Then, he contacted the state he was born in (Virginia) to inquire about getting it changed on his birth certificate. This required he fill out a form from their website requesting changes to a birth certificate, and send that in with a copy of his court order name change form and a fee of $12 (to get a legal copy of the new birth certificate).

All total, he spent $106.

Here in the UK it is £40:00 and can now be done through the register office. I know this for certain because I picked an application form from the register office for someone yesterday.
Hope this helps.

A few hundred dollars maximum, and probably far less. Very simple process. Violet posted an excellent explanation a few days ago - you might search for it.
