Question Home

Position:Home>Genealogy> What nationality is my moms last name it is sagh?

Question:It's so hard to tell a nationality from a surname! Sagh most likely is Hungarian. Could be from some other Germanic or Eastern European area... you'd really have to start tracing the ancestry to know for sure.
FamilySearch.org shows there is a Ságh family from Bakony Jako, Veszprem, Hungary on the 1880 census. Ancestry's surname page lists the most common place of departure as England... but it's more likely that they traveled from some other place to England with the intention of immigrating.

im going to go with german

i would say arabic!

I think it's Hindi-India

So far I can only find it as a first name as being Arabic in origin. Means "listener" apparently.

According to Google it is also the name of a Norwegian band and an Indian dish made with spinach.

Most American "hits" at Ancestry seem to be in either Kentucky or Ohio. One or two in the English censuses, but really uncommon anywhere. One guy in the US census claimed his birthplace as Romania, but I can't see any real favourites. It probably began life as another spelling altogether and became its current spelling quite recently in the 19th or 20th centuries. I don't think you'll ever get a satisfactory answer to this question, but as ever, I'll be more than happy to be proved wrong.

Not sure about origin, but it's not German/Teutonic

if there as an i at the end then arab for sure my science teacher mr.saghi is from the middle east
