Position:Home>Genealogy> How do i get my original birth certificate from the state i was born in?

Question:you can never get the 'original' birth certificate-that has to remain on file in the community records or hospital records where you were born, forever. You can ONLY get a certified or notarized COPY. If your original were taken from the records where it is kept, then there is NO trace of you there for a copy later on!
You cannot just 'call' and get one-no matter what some uniformed answers here claim. It would be too easy for anyone to get it and steal your identity. You are going to have to call the hospital, they might refer you to county records or city records-and they will tell you how to provide proof of who you are to get a copy. Yes it might be a pain to get one, but if it wasn't so difficult-illegal immigrants and terrorists would no trouble stealing identies fast!
And the answers 'just ask your parents for it' - again, someone that doesn't know what they are talking about. It's one of the easiest things to lose-not many parents keep exact records from the day you were born so they can find it-and all too often-when a birth certificate is needed for registering at a school or something-the unthinking parent just hands over the 'original copy' instead of getting another certified copy (any bank will do this for you) and keeping the original copy at home. Even my supposely 'intelligent' college grad son almost sent HIS only copy in to register for something...we caught it just before he mailed it and made him take it to the bank for a certified copy.

go to the state and present id and say "i want my birth certificate"

typically your parents have it, (or loose it) it happend to me but you can get a replacement one but not the actual first copy of it..

Call the hospital where you were born.. They can send it to you.

u should already have it, if not u will only get a copy now

go to the town you were born in and they usually have it

I believe you have to go to a Health department in that State. From what I have experienced it doesn't have to be any specific one.

You can go to your local social security office.

You write to the Department of Vital Records for that state. Here's a website that might help you: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/howto/w2w/w2welc...

You contact Vital Records in the County that you were born. Except if you were adopted. which I am, this is a very lenghty process.

go to the hospital you were born in and ask for your records

If you want a hard copy, you have to go to your town/city clerks office. That'll probably be in your town/city hall.

If you are away from your state of origin, you probably can have a family member get it for you. I doubt they'll mail you one if you were to just call.

the original you will need to contact your parents or guardian when you were born.
Good luck!

I don't know what state ur in so i can't give ou a link but search your state and birth certificate application and you'll find it. I think it cost a lil money. (it did for me anyway).

ask fo it.

Call the courthouse in the county where you were born. They will tell you what you need to do. You will probably need to send in a copy of your government issued id or driver's license and a fee if you live too far from there. You will only be getting a copy. A parent should have gotten the original when you were born.

call 911-9119 (911)

Most major cities have an administration building that has records like that. All you would have to do there is have ID with you and to pay a small amount.

Contact the City Hall of the town for the state you were born in, you may can even do it on line.

Department of Vital Records for that state. You can do it on line, however it will only be certified copy if you have already received the original.

Write to the Vital Statistics or go to their website most of them have them, if they do you can order it online in the County where you were born. You can also check with the Recorder's office but the fee should be about the same regardless.

orncontact the city hall in the state where you were b...usually it takes a couple of weeks , also in some cities you can go to your local currency exchange...for

First off, you won't get the original. That is always on file at the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Even your parent's didn't get THE original.

Use the link
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/howto/w2w/w2welc...
and click on the appropriate state. It will tell you exactly how to go about getting one - including costs, addresses, phone numbers, requirements and procedures.. Might as well get the right information and all states aren't the same.

However, it must be requested by the person themself - or their parent or legal guardian if they are a minor. If you are anyone else, don't even bother. They won't let you have it.

If you are asking because you are adopted, this is something that you can only obtain in 6 US states. The other 44 still practice the inhumane act of sealed records.

Check with the county you were born in; birth records are kept on file both at the county and state level. However if it is sealed, you will need "permission" from your birth parents. Good luck.

Your birth certificate is kept on file at the town office in the town you were born in, as well as the town your parents lived in when you were born. In Maine, I think it cost $15-20 to get a copy.
