Position:Home>Genealogy> Grt. Grandfathers Birth Cert. Can anyone help?

Question:I have his marriage and death cert. but I am desperately trying to locate his birth.
Tried the area he lived- Kensington, Ladbroke Grove, Latimer Road, Hammersimith, but to no avail, and the other Registrars in H'smith and Fulham area said unless there is a definate d.o.b, registrars' don't have the manpower to search.
I think he lied about his age to either marry or join the army (WW1).
He has no middle name and just to 'add to that' he has a cousin and Uncle with the same name born quite closely in years to him.
George Briggs 1879-1882c Kensington, (comes under Fulham and Hammersmith), his dad is Richard and mother Emma Collins.
Would appreciate any help or advice.
On one census it has been marked down as 'Bensington', because of the appalling handwriting!

I found George Briggs in the 1880 index, registered in Fulham, in the J/F/M quarter, the volume number is 1A and the page number is 231. You can order the certificate from the Fulham register office or here,

hope this helps.

I'm a bit confused ... email me the info.

You said that he may have lied about his age ... but if he was born 1879-1882c - surely he would have been well old enough to enlist for WW1. Its more likely he may have gone to the Boer War.

have you searched the BMD's on FindMyPast.com?

eh?

If you look at the census parishes for the kensington area you might find that checking the parish records for his baptism will help.
This will name both of his parents.
You may find that you will come accross the cousin and uncle there also and be able to eliminate them from the births records you have found.
I have family who lied on both marriage and army records.
On census records they often 'rounded' the ages up to the nearest 5 years, so if he was 43, they would mark him down as 45. Its a total pain at times.

If you have time on your hands, you can search the public records yourself. I will try to locate the address for you in a moment, otherwise you can just ask at your local registrars.
I have been there and I would suggest you start by looking at the death and marriage registers first for any extra details that could help. If you know for sure which city he was born in, and what year, it will also help to locate his birth certificate.

I'll try to post the address shortly, I cant remember it now, st katherines or something but it's in London.

These are the only 2 I found in Fulham in that general time frame.

Have you found this family on the 1881 census, because this would at least narrow it down to before or after 1881?

I have looked but can't find them.

Is his fathers name Richard Jabus (possibly transcription error) Briggs, I see a dude of this name married a Emma Collins in 1876 Fulham.

In 1881 there is a Julius and Emma Briggs born in Notting Hill with son Henry R. in Lambeth.
Okay this is probably clutching at straws but it's not unknown for pesky ancestors to decide to use a different name for no apparent reason.
