one place to search for instances of a name, is www.familysearch.org... the good part being that LDS members use original sources for much of the extractions (like church registers). Based on that.. the name appears from Norway to Australia.. including England, Germany, Netherlands.. so on.
One common misconception for new researchers is that a name MUST come from one single original place, or a single, long ago person (so everyone with the name probably descends from that person, and everyone with the name is related). The reality is that many names show up in known historical records in different locations, none of which can be shown as "original". (SOMETIMES they can).
Tracing a surname is not the same as tracing your lineage, and learning where your own ancestry comes from. Unfortunately, many persons accept that perhaps Muse (as an example) only comes from Germany, THEREFORE this is proof that they have German ancestry. In reality, had they worked their own history, they may find factual records showing their ancestors originated in Denmark or <fill in the blank>
I am in the US, and of course, there are thousands of Muses here. And many of them will wrongly assume that THEY all descend from one single immigrant to the US with this name.
There are many places online that attempt to define the place where a name originates, and some of those may have some validity. The question is, does that apply to YOU? Many times, the answer is no.. it does not necessarily apply to you.
