NO, I am not going to ask any of my family members because if I could, I wouldn't be asking this question now.

Here is a general explanation regarding dna testing, what it can, or cannot show, and estimate of cost. The lower priced testing is not going to be as explicit. It will NOT tell you if you are Irish, German, so forth, but is much broader (European, Asian, etc.). It won't tell you that your gr grandfather was born in a certain place, what his parents were.
Overall.. for more recent and explicit info, your best route is still reliable genealogy. This involves using valid documentation to prove your ancestors, and starting from yourself, working back. You will not find the more recent documents online.. for instance, your birth certificate "proves" your own parents, their records "prove" theirs. Most of these are restricted, since they can and often are, misused.
The wording of the question suggests that you are not on the best terms with family members. If they are living (or within a certain time frame), they are often the only ones with legal rights to get those records. IF you know your grandparents/ gr grandparents (whoever might be born prior to 1930), you can pick it up in census records. It is getting to that generation that could prove difficult for you, if you don't have cooperation from family, or choose to not involve them. You MIGHT have contact with perhaps aunts/uncles who you feel comfortable talking to. An alternative could be obituaries for grandparents, but those might be hard to find, or won't include the things you need (names and dates/places for their parents).
In all honesty, I think what you want, will be difficult. Accurate research DEPENDS on finding the valid records.
Someone else may have other suggestions.
