Szabó is one of the most frequent family names in Hungary, and has been for centuries. It means 'tailor', or more literally, 'one who cuts or metes out'. It occurs as a byname by the mid-14th century, and has been in continuous use since. Up to about the 17th century, the most common spelling of this name was Zabo, and some families still use it in this archaic form.

Some early (14th-15th century) instances of the surname may be connected with an old given name (from the 12th-13th centuries, when most people in Hungary used only a single name); this given name in turn may have had the sense 'one who sets taxes, fines, fees, rules, etc.'
