I don't understand why you can't ask your mother, but you could try your grandparents, aunts, uncles or friends of your mother from 16 years ago, to see if any of them remember a man named Braxton. I don't know anyone by that first name, so if I had ever met him, I'd remember.
Good luck and if your mother is still alive, try to establish a better relationship with her, before it's too late.
(Jeff M said to look in the "MORUGE", you could try that, if you knew what it was.)

try friend finder

Not much you can do without your mother helping.

Any other family that might know? Friends of your mother?

Google his name!

i actually found my mom by callling 411, no lie. I called them and gave them her maiden name, they gave me a list of 10 people and by sheer luck i guessed the right one. Its worth a try.

If you want to know anything else about him, you have to ask your mother. She's the only person who knows the truth.

You really do know more about him than his first name. You know he abandoned your mother before you were born. So, why would you think he matters enough to find?

your mother shouldn't keep information like that from you! ask relatives in confidence of his last name.....then phone book it on the internet then ring.....that's how i found my mother i actually found her sister first so you might stumble upon a relative of his who might be able to help you. otherwise you might have to pay for it. google find people or relatives. Or hire a private investigator.

You might try an oblique approach - ask your mom why she won't tell you. If you are the result of date rape, for instance, of if he did 10 years for molesting his 12-year old daughter by another woman, you should know. Try "Look, I'm not asking for his last name. Please just tell me why you think it is better for me not to know him."

As others have said, he didn't like you well enough to stay with your mom (Or he couldn't, due to his being married to someone else or doing time in prison.) If he was dead you wouldn't know him either. Life sometimes isn't fair.

UM ASK YOUR MOM AND THEN LOOK IN THE MORUGE
