really wrong

you pretty much slapped your whole ancestry in the face

thousands of people who came before you and created you, you decide you dont want to be like them. people die to protect thier families good name and you just change it
good job! feel good about that
imagine telling your great great grandfather

no one can say weather you are right or wrong because if that the way you feel then change your last name for your benefit. if your more comfortable with your dads last name i would say go for it. its not that big of a deal. its not up to us to tell you if it was wrong for you to do so. its up to what you think personally no one else can say what you think and feel.

I wouldn't say you were wrong, but it isn't up to me to decide whether you were wrong or not - it's up to you.

Whatever you decide to do has to be weighed against your own personal goals and the consequences (in this case, the opinions of people you care about). If nobody cares that you switched your name, then you didn't do anything wrong. If your family dislikes that you changed your name, but it doesn't bother you - then not really. How does it hurt them? How does it hurt you?

Taking pride in your family name is important to some people, but it's up to you to decide whether or not you really did the right thing, not somebody else.

it depends, do you have a good relationship with your dad and that side of your family, if not then fine do what you want, but if you do have a good relationship with then, you just chose vanity over faimily is that really the type of person you want to show urself tobe...

Lots of people change their name. Nobody else really cares that much; it's important mainly to you. If you're happy, I'm happy.

Since you didn't say what your first name is, I can't say whether it sounds "weird" or not. All I can say is this (and I also don't know if your Dad is alive or not), but it was a name he was proud enough to pass on to his children--just as his father passed it to him--and his children should be proud of it as well and KEEP it.
According to www.familynamesonline.com the origin of it is this:
Shales
Origin: English
Spelling variations of this family name include: Shales, Sheylls, Shayles, Shayle, Shail, Shale, Scheyle, Sheyles and many more.
First found in Somerset where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor.
Coat of Arms: A red shield with six silver escallops (the meanings of the colors, etc. are:RED--Warrior or martyr; Military strength and magnanimity**; SILVER-- Peace and sincerity; Escallop or scallop-shaped shell--Traveller to far places or victorious naval commander).

(**in case you wonder, this word means "liberal in bestowing gifts; extremely liberal and generous of spirit; generous; or greatness of soul")
So, the first person to be given this coat of arms showed he could fight when the need arose, but he could be kind and generous to others as well; he could be a warrior,or a war hero (a martyr is "one who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle"). but he was one who'd rather live in peace. He wouldn't back down from something he believed in, however.

So, yes, I would say you were wrong. Why want a name like Smith that is so common and ordinary? At www.familysearch.org, I just looked up the name, and would you believe in one of the alternate spellings (SHEYLLS) in England--where it originated--there are listings as far back as 1541 (and some list the parents names, so you know the name is a LOT older than even 1521), and that is not counting the listings in South America, Africa, the Caribbean, etc.

Like I said above, I don't know whether your Dad is still alive or not, but if he is, I'd apologize and say maybe Shales isn't such a weird name after all.

Usually people want to change their name FROM Smith to something else! Its your decision so how can we comment?
