World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Name: Andrea Ingrassia City: Jamestown County: Chautauqua State: New York Birth Date: 2 Apr 1880 (different birthdate again) Race: White Roll: 1753740 DraftBoard: 0 (On the original copy view, someone had written his name as ANDREW and he must have crossed out the last letter and wrote "a" above it. Said MERCY INGRASSIA was his nearest relative?? Maybe this is a different person??) (This is all I could find. No brothers or sisters were listed, and it seems his daughter was an only child, too) Was he actually from Palermo? Or was he possibly from one of the small villages in the area? The only Andrea Ingrassia immigrating in 1907 was actually born in 1878-79 (he was 29 when he came to the US in 1907) First Name: Andrea Last Name: Ingrassia Ethnicity: Italy, So. Italian Last Place of Residence: Trapani, Italy Date of Arrival: May 06, 1907 Age at Arrival: 29y Gender: M Marital Status: M Ship of Travel: Roma Port of Departure: Naples Manifest Line Number: 0012 If this is your grandfather, then finding the records you need will be very simple. You just have to follow these steps in order, putting aside any preconceived feelings about religion, and you should get about 200-500 years worth of records over the next year. Step 1. Contact the National Archives and Records Administration center for the state where Andrea lived when he applied for citizenship (probably NY according to WWI draft registration records). You want to request his Declaration of Intent and his Naturalization Petition. That will confirm not only his parents' names, but it will also give you the actual town of his birth and the names of all siblings, etc. Step 2. Contact the Catholic parish in the town where he was born and request a copy of his baptismal records. Also ask if the parents were baptized and married in the same parish. If so, ask for those records. If not, ask them if they can advise which parish it was. All Catholic records on a person are maintained by the parish that performs their baptism. So you need to keep writing to parishes asking the same questions for every generation. You can also ask for sacramental records on "last rites" or the burial of the person, and whether the person is buried in the parish cemetary. That's all it takes in a Catholic country where the Church was legally required to maintain all records on in their village. Usually, you'll want to include enough money for copying and postage, plus $10 to request a mass in honor of the loved ones being looked up. According to ellisisland.org: Guiseppe Ingrassia and his sisters, Maria and Rosalia (ages 24, 23 & 17) arrived on Jun 25, 1912 from Palermo, with their destination as being NY. They list their nearest relative in Palermo as their father, Giovanni. Don't know if they share the same Giovanni as Andrea's, but it may be worth a shot. |
