One thing to be aware of is that arms were originally issued to an individual, and not a family. To truly determine your coat of arms, you would need to track your family bloodline back and see what, if any, arms were assigned to them. You can find some that are associated with certain surnames, but you can't be guaranteed that it is your "correct" coat of arms.

See the link below regarding Scottish Coats of Arms. http://www.bothwell.cx/arms.shtml There is no such thing as a family crest.

A crest is part of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.

See links below, one from the British College of Arms and the other from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.

You might have a clan badge.

However, these peddlers that sell coats of arms are just in it to make money. Actually, there might have been 10 different individuals named Macdonald that were granted their own coat of arms. The peddlers that sell them won't have all of them. They don't need to in order to sell to gullible Americans.

There are no laws in the U.S. regarding heraldry. IN some countries a person would risk prosecution for displaying a coat of arms without proof that they are entitled to it.

If this is a school assignment print off the 2 links and a picture of any coat of arms with your name underneath it and give it to your teacher. If you can't find a coat of arms like you want, then print off what I have posted along with the 2 links and give to your teacher. Just put coat of arms or "family crest" in your search engine and see what you find. House of Names has one with the lower case d.

Anytime you go into someone's home and see one of those walnut plaques on their den wall or over their fireplace, be polite and don't let them know you are laughing. What they are displaying is a coat of arms that just happened to be granted to someone with their surname and might not even be related.

There are some people who resent people on this board warning about the chicanery in the surname product business like coats of arms. I am not sure if they are in the pocket of one of those merchants of deceit or if they have one of those cute little plaques and they don't won't it known that what they are displaying might not have anything to do with them or their family.

I think this site has your info you need

Very few families actually have family crests - most of the companies that say they will research yours and sell you one are just scams to get your money, and they give you something they made up.

I'm including a link to an article on the heraldry, coats of arms, and family crests. It's from Rootsweb, a highly respected resource for genealogists.

google it....
