Try some of these:

http://www.familysearch.org/
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/index....
http://www.rootsweb.com/
http://freegenealogycanada.com/
http://www.cyndislist.com/
http://www.kindredkonnections.com/

I got a good start with all of these, and the ancestry.com forums (which are free). I think I found it a daunting process and finally signed up for ancestry.com just because it was easier to have everything available in one place! But a lot of what they have can be found elsewhere.

Edit:

ancestry.com also has free 14-day trial. Search for records, bookmark them, sign-up, view them, cancel account.

myheritage.com

Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org are probably the best 2 free sites.

Also your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com that you can use. Ancestry.Com has lots of records and seems to be getting more all the time. They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet. They have U.K. censuses also.

Now, don't take as absolute fact information seen in family trees on ANY website, free or paid. Documentation is not required. Most are not documented or poorly documented. You might see different information from different submitters on the same people. Then you will see repeatedly the same info on the same people but no documentation. A lot of people copy without verifying. The information should only be used as CLUES as to where to get the documentation.

Also if a person has Family Tree Maker and a subscription to Genealogy.Com, for instance, they can merge other people''s trees into theirs and then upload the merged tree into various genealogy websites. This means they are just collecting names and really don't have quality research.

The first thing you should do is get as much info from living family as possible, particularly your senior members. Tape them if they will let you. They might be confused on some matters, but what might seem to be insignificant ramblings and story telling might turn out to be very significant. People who do this state they go back a few years later after doing research and hear things they didn't hear the first time around. See if anyone has any old famiy bibles.

A Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church is free to use. They have record on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee. I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell. I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else.

You will need to document everything, births, marriages, death. Birth and Death certificates have both parents' names including mother's maiden name and usually
the death certificate will have their places of birth. Now in the U. S., each state has its own laws about who, when and where you can get birth and death certificates.

If you can't get those certificates, church records, depending on the faith, can be very important, Baptisms, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriages and Death. Frequently these contain parent information.

if you go to the Church of Latterday Saints, aka Mormon website type mormon geoealogy in the engine you can search for free. And you don't have to register and worry about junk mail or emails . Its pretty cool site I found a lot there for my family, Who by the way was not mormon and you don't have to be,

tribalpages.com gives you a great place to keep track of your family lines, it does have pay options, but also provides a free option.

genforum.com is a great forum to contact others searching the same families that you are.

gencircles.com

good luck

i tried the National Archives several times on census but found alot of scribbled names.
