What is the differerence between a "cousin once removed" and a "s

Question:i can't believe how many people got this wrong. why even answer if you don't know? my aunt was a geneologist so I know this one for sure. ok so let me start it off this way: You and your aunt's kids are first cousins. if your first cousin has a kid, that kid is your "first cousin once removed". if you have a kid, your kid and your first cousin's kid are second cousins. As in the second generation of both cousins becoming the "second" cousins. Hope this helps.

The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. what a coincidence; i recently met someone who'd researched this (proper academic research, not googling). according to him, they're the same thing. except 'cousin once removed' is the more correct terminology. it might depend on the country you're in though.

I think a second cousin is a cousin of one of your parents, and a cousin once removed is a cousin of your cousin, who is therefore only related to you through marriage and not blood.

Sorry, I am not aware of these two phrases.

Think of it this way

If you share a set of grandparents with someone then you are 1st cousins
If you share a set of great grandparents you are 2nd cousins
If you share a set of gg grandparents you are 3rd cousins
If you share a set of ggg grandparents you are 4th cousins and so on...

So, by definition a second cousin is someone that you share a set of great grandparents with. In other words, the children of your parents cousins are your second cousins.

Now, what is a first cousin once removed?
Take you and your first cousin for instance. If your first cousin has a child, then the child becomes your first cousin once removed, because they are one generation removed from your first cousin. You and your first cousin once removed don't share your ancestry to the same degree. For example, your grandparents are the child's great grandparents so as you can see the generations are "uneven" so to speak.

Go with HSKs mama. Other than her, very few people got this right. It is amazing to me how many people will answer a question when they have no idea of the correct answer, and will in turn, misguide the person asking the question into believing information that is just plain wrong.

Lets suppose your first cousin is Joe (he would be the son of your parent's brother or sister). Joe and you each have children. Let's suppose you and Joe are 60 years old, so you each also have grandchildren, meaning your children have children.

In this situation, you and Joe are, as stated, first cousinis. Joe's children are your first cousins once removed. Joe's grandchildren are your first cousins twice removed. Likewise, your children are first cousin once removed to Joe and your grandchildren are first cousin twice removed to Joe.

Now for the next part. Joe's children and your children are 2nd cousins to each other.

Joe's grandchildren and your grandchildren are 3rd cousins to each other.

Joe's grandchildren are 2nd cousin once removed to your children. Likewise, your grandchildren are 2nd cousin once removed to Joe's children.

I believe a second cousin is on your side of the family and a cousin once removed is a cousin by marriage if the marriage ends in divorce

A someone that was your cousin due to marrige that ends in a divorce and a second cousin would be like your moms cousin or dads cousin
