Also now many local libraries have a genealogy research room and they can order books you need at no charge, some of the websites above have free sections but most have of course a charge for detailed info.....a great and easy to use software is FamilyTreeMaker and one version has a free one year subscription to ancestory.com, plus they have free on line updates......happy family hunting.....ps....the lds.org is the official Morman website, it has quite a lot many times even if you are not Morman which I am not

Your question is way too broad. For starters, what country are you in? Research in the U.S. and research in the U.K., Australia or New Zealand is approached from different angles. This forum basically reaches the whole English speaking world.

Next, what part of the country are you searching? There are some areas of a country that may have records online, but remember, as a general rule, most places don't. Some genealogy societies post records online as well as some libraries and cemeteries. You are blessed if you happen to be searching in an area with an active genealogical or historical society- especially if they have websites. These groups can be a genealogists best friend. The truth is there is no one stop shop to get your genealogy completed. Not all answers are online. There maybe instances where you have to go to the library or visit the dusty basement of a courthouse or walk an old cemetery.

Another thing that is going to determine what websites will be helpful to you is the research you have done to date. Are you back far enough in your research where existing websites may help you? Remember, genealogy is about researching your ancestors. Because of privacy laws, the records that are available for public view are usually 70-100 years old depending on what country you are in. If you are not back that far, then most genealogy sites will not be useful to you.

The suggestions of Ancestry.com, Rootsweb, Familysearch and Genweb are all good GENERAL suggestions, but in order to get answers that will really help you, you will need to revamp your question to include country, locality, and time frame. If you don't all you will have is a collection of links.

HSK's mama knows her stuff when it comes to genealogy. Pay attention to what you said.

Also, on any website, free or paid, you can't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees. Documentation is not required. They trees are not documented or poorly documented. Even when you see the same info repeatedly by many different submitters, that is no guarantee it is correct.
A lot of people copy without veriying.

Use the information as clues as to where to get the documentation.

I have had the found the most information with ancestry.com. There is a fee but they do give you a 14 day trial period.
