one cheap and fast source to work is www.familysearch.org (which is the LDS site).
Entries in what is called the IGI (international genealogical index) come from 2 places. One is user submitted files, which are based on someone's personal research. The other source, which is more in depth is when church members have taken entries directly from such things as church registers. THOSE are more reliable.
What came up in the IGI are entries not only from Germany, but also Austria or Czechoslovakian. There also are entries from the 1880 census, which VARY. Assuming YOUR direct ancestor was in the US by that time, that is your best lead to determine where they came from. Prussian and Germany can refer to the same place; and Austria's jurisdiction will also affect this.

yea im german, i moved to the us 5 yrs ago. however my last name is not neugebauer

German, yes, and have descendants named Bauer, but not Neugebauer.

It's actually a fairly common name. About 2,000+ US census entries, 551 SSDI entries, lots of Texas information, over 1,000 immigration entries and currently, over 8,000 public record and phone book hits.

If you know of a specific DECEASED person in your family (lived 1930 or earlier would be best), if you could post information (name, dob, date of death, where born, spouse, children, etc.) about them, might be able to find something out for you.
