1st generation would be the people's children.
So for instance, 2 people move to America. Their children would be 1st generation Americans, since they were the first ones in their family born in America.

However, if a 1st generation parent is born in America, their children would be 2nd generation Americans. It wouldn't matter if the other parent was born elsewhere.

I've always heard it used to describe the individuals who immigrated, though wikipedia notes there is not a clear consensus on how to use the term.

For example, a couple immigrates to the US and becomes citizens. They are first generation.

They have children. The children are second generation.
