Position:Home>Genealogy> Please can anyone tell me if i can ask for help to find my husbands cousin in th

Question:YAHOO policy prohibits posting personal info about a living person. Most reputable genealogical sites follow that standard, but not all. It is a condition of using THIS site. The UK has laws relating to privacy online, which have nothing to do with sites that are not in the UK.

However.. yahoo does not control or have authority over independent sites, and there are many sites that can offer help. They are not necessarily illegal, although some persons make them sound like it.

There are valid reasons for looking for someone. Your cousin might be a runaway, so there is backing for looking for him, although I doubt there would be anyone who could help much on that. I am familiar with custody battles where parents take off with kids (through my daughter), and that becomes a legal issue with the court, and only between the parents. If the cousin is an adult, and simply CHOOSES TO be lost, that is a right that he has. Even police find it difficult for those situations. They nomally only get involved if there is reason to think there is foul play or something like an accident.
If you are talking about simply finding relatives that you have lost touch with, there are online phone and address directories, ie www.zabasearch.com is excellent. That often will 'cross' into persons who are deceased like their parents. Dead persons are normally found in the social security death index in the US; from there you can work to locate an obit that may tell you what you need.
So.. you can ask for help, if you do so in general terms (as you did). My experience with finding relatives has always been positive.. they are not hiding, and they don't consider it invading privacy. If I discovered their social security number,or listed info on the net (for others to find/ misuse), that would be misuse of info.

If he/she is still living, we are not allowed to give out their whereabouts on YA due to privacy reasons. Otherwise, if the cousin is deceased, we can help if we know a name and dates to have some starting point. :)
