The Social Security Death Index lists an Edward Chappell born August 6, 1902 who died in Escondido. His middle name according to the California Death Index was MOULTON, not Willis, and whereas he grew up in Wisconsin and got his social security card there, he was born in Providence, Rhode Island.

I also have never heard of a local cemetery named "Memory Gardens" Someplace in San Diego County there is the Nuevo Memory Gardens Cemetery, but Mr. Chappell was not burried there. Oak Hill Memorial Park is the main cemetery in Escondido. I checked www.findagrave.com and http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov since you thought he was a veteran, but he's not listed.

His obit was printed in the Feb 23, 1982 issue of the Escondido Times Advocate (page B3) - If you'd like it, there is an obit request form on this webpage http://www.library.escondido.org/pioneer...

The obit says that he was burried in Oak Hill and the funeral was at St. Mary's Catholic Church. His wife Carol moved up to LA after his death and she in turn died Feb 4,1987.

If you know his death date, why don't you try contacting the public library in that community? I'm sure they could provide a copy of the obituary, and it would contain the names of survivors. With that information, you could look them up in whitepages.com and give them a call.

I use this method all the time.
