Position:Home>Genealogy> Can I prove Native American decent if the Native members of my family were born

Question:On my mother's side, my family has all been Apache Indian. The line has very little white in it, making me nearly 50% Apache. I want to gain tribal membership, but that requires proof that those in my family are Apache. But all of my Apache family was born in Mexico, in the northern area, near the border. I'm pretty sure they have different laws about Native people down there, and don't keep record (as far as I know).

I have pictures and family trees, but would they work here in the states?

Each Apache tribe (San Carlos, White Mountain, etc.) has its own enrollment requirements, one of which is that you must descend from that particular Apache tribe. (i.e. If you are a descedant of the San Carlos Apache tribe you could be eligible for enrollment with the San Carlos Apache tribe but not the White Mountain Apache Tribe.) Since you've stated that your Apache family is from Mexico you need to contact that Apache tribe in Mexico to see if you qualify for enrollment with them. Unless you descend from a US-based Apache tribe it is unlikely you will be eligible for enrollment with one. In addition to being a descendant you may also have to meet a blood quantum, residency or other requirement.

I think these people can answer.
