Position:Home>Genealogy> How to find out information about someone who died over 12 years ago?

Question:About 12 years ago some one I knew passed away and they were very young. I was very young myself. I would like to know more information about what happened. Where is the best place to find this information online? The story came out in the paper. I would like to find the information for free, online? Does anyone have any suggestions?

12 years ago there weren't many newspapers using the internet for their daily. If it was in a really major paper like the Chicago Tribune, New York Times or Washington Post, then it will be online. But for most other newspapers, even those as large as the Detroit Free Press, you have to go to the library and pull the film of that month's papers and page through until you find it.

Because of privacy laws, most recent records aren't available online. It has mostly to do with identity theft. But if you're still living in the same town, your library will definitely be able to help you.

Err. Google? It might help. Also look for sites that help you with that kinda stuff. Its real easy just serch it and most of them are free. Good luck!

If you know the name of the paper -- the city, county and state, you might be able to get a copy of that newspaper death notice which would give information about the deceased and his/her family. That would give you a lead to family members who could be contacted by checking the local phone book. Check cemeteries in that area for additional information.

Assuming you recall the name correctly, they should still show up in the social security death index. From there, you have the date and place, and can check the newspaper route.
Unless you have a relationship like sibling, you can't get the death certificate.
