Question:are they Native American?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: are they Native American?

I found these by doing a yahoo search "genealogy Hornbuckle". You could do that too.

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchm...
shows two Hornbuckles arrived through Ellis Island from England. They were unlikely to have been Native American.

http://www.onegreatfamily.com/surname/ho...
shows 4 entries for Hornbuckle born before 1500. I don't know if Native American records go back that far, but it is a paid site with a 7 day free trial, you would have to join to learn more.

http://www.cousinconnect.com/p/a/0/s/hor... lists other sites you could try, but there is quite a bit of duplication of information.

I also did a search for "hornbuckle name origin", with further pages open to me.
shows there were Cherokee Hornbuckles.

Go on, do yahoo searches like I did, and have fun checking out all the possible answers

for the most part, you cannot assume that any name is strictly of any one background.
As analogy.. John Hornbuckle might have immigrated from <fill in the blank>, and later had 4 sons. Two sons may have married women with English background, while the other two may have married Native American women. Those who descend from the 2nd two sons would have valid Native ancestry, but the descendents from the first two sons would not. They are all still Hornbuckles.
Take it one step further.. everyone with the same last name is not always related. If my last name is Caldwell, I am not necessarily related to African American families with that same last name. Caldwell is neither a caucasian or African American name.
You have to be specific when doing research. The question is to trace your own direct line, and determine what they "are" (or are not), based on valid historical records.
