Position:Home>Genealogy> Is there a way to access US census information for free on-line?

Question:As Wendy C mentioned, the 1880 US census is available for free at the Latter Day Saints website which is www.familysearch.org

I found a couple of more links that may be of help
http://www.us-census.org/
This is a project started by Gen Web and is in no way complete. Unfortunately, they have nothing on Rochester (Monroe County) New York. (I remember you have some family there.) It may be a useful site though if you have family elsewhere.

http://www.census-online.com/links/NY/

This one is by no means "Complete" either, but may have links that can help you.

You could subscribe to Ancestry for the free trial period and cancel before it is up if you would like.

You might want to check the genealogy department of your local library. Many libraries have a subscription to Ancestry.com or heritagequest where you can look up and pring the censuses for free.

If there is only a few censuses you need... (10 or less) I would be happy to pull them for you and E-mail them to you as attachments. Just E-mail me through my profile. I hope this helps. Good luck.

yes, sort of.

There are two major places to find census info. Heritage Quest and Ancestry.

Contact your local library and ask if they have access to either of these services. Heritage Quest can usually be accessed from home if you have a library card. Ancestry.com offers a service for libraries called Ancestry Library Edition. It is free but must be accessed at the library. You can also see the index for the 1880 at www.familysearch.org (the website ran by the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints) the mormons.

www.familysearch.org has the entire 1880 and 1881 census transcribed. It isn't the original image, which is something you should check. I have also found many county sites through www.usgenweb.com that have various census records posted. That is a hit and miss thing, however.
What the census bureau has online, is statistical summaries. Not the original films.
For all of them online, ancestry is the best known. I used to do microfilms at the LDS family history centers, but even that was 3.00 film rental with no guarantee. That was before ancestry.com was in business.

Hi Karen,

Many large LDS churches have Family History Centers. Look in the phone book under "Churches" to see if yours does. Most FHC's have access to census images, all counties, 1790 - 1930. If your library doesn't, it is the next best bet. They let you look for free, but charge a dime or fifteen cents if you print a page. You can transcribe and e-mail it to yourself for free, if you have a POP-3 account. They welcome anyone. I'm not even Christian, let alone Mormon, and they welcome me. You should wear a nice top and slacks or a skirt, out of consideration.

Some US Gen Web sites for some counties have some censues for some years.

If you want to access the whole census from home, at any hour, in your underwear, you have to buy a subscription.

Well it depend on what you are looking for. Are you looking for the census reports or something else. If you are looking for relatives in the past then you would want to look at heritagequest which you should be able to access for free from your library's homepage with your library card.

If you could be more specific I think we could help you a little better.
