61 people came through Ellis Island with that surname. Many were Italian, but there were also Austrians, Hungarians, and Poles. http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchM...

So the answer to your question is that it came from many countries, though mostly Italian. But if you descend from those two Poles whose surname was Stefania, you're probably not related to a single one of those Italians. So the 20:1 chance of your being Polish, Austrian or Hungarian means you need to still disregard all those Italian references if they're not related to you at all.

Names came from many countries and developed independently of each other. You have to follow the paper trail to know where your own family originated to know what it all means for your family.

I think Italy maybe

italia sicuramente... sono italiano

Sorry, I searched for it but couldn't find it. If I had to guess, i'd say mid-European.

It actually comes from the Greek Greek name Stephanos. Stefania is used widely in Italy and Romania.

It originated in Italy

ancestry.com only includes ONE immigrant with this name, and that immigrant came from Hungary.
You have to be careful, as to what you are hoping to find. The country that a NAME comes from, is NOT always where your family with the name, comes from. Most of the "origin" sites or info, are generic, or even misleading.
If you are looking to know your heritage, don't focus on the surname. Identify the person, and find specific records. Many persons see "where did the name come from?" questions, and just guess. A wrong guess can waste your time, if you rely on guesses instead of actual records.

Most of the Stefania immigrants came through NY from Italy, and usually the southern regions.
