Position:Home>Genealogy> On the 1901 census, what does the term Nurse Child mean?Question:The term Nurse Child is beside the persons age Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The term Nurse Child is beside the persons age Usually this term describes some kind of informal fostering arrangement. For example, if one or both parents of a child died and the person remaining was unable to look after the infant, it would often be placed with another local household (possibly other distant family or friends) who for a small fee would look after the child on their behalf, hence the term 'nurse child'. Often also hides some kind of illegitamacy - a good neighbour who takes a child in from a single mother who is unable to look after it. A 'Nurse child' seems to be similar to a fostered or adopted child (i.e. living with or raised by a family other than their own for whatever reasons). I found this information on my favourite site, "Nurse Child A child being looked after by another family for payment " http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/n-o.html http://rmhh.co.uk/medical.html We had a "nurse child" in our family, this is the explanation I have written into my research. Hope this helps. |
