it sounds slavic, but not polish ( polish surnames have a w instead of a v ). It could be Russian, Slovak, Bosnian, etc. One thing you could do is research the immigration waves of the slavic countries, and try tracking down what year the krivan's paternal ancestor immigrated in, or post this question on a few query boards, such as the one on ancestry.com, or cousinconnect.com , and maybe if your lucky someone might be familiar with the surname and reply to you :)

It sounds like it has a baltic area origin. Slovokian probably. Thats a good place to start.
