Question Home

Position:Home>Genealogy> I named my daughter Kimmerle, which is actually my maternal familiy's surname

Question:I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a close definition to my daughter's first name. Kimmerle. It is actually my mom's maiden last name, but I thought it beautiful for a first name. If you have any semi- educated answers on the subject, I'd appreciate it....thanks so much! Happy holidays!!

I emphatically don't reccomend places selling family "histories" or coats of arms, and am using this to illustrate-

per this, it is an old English surname and variation of something else. If you then visit the Kimmerle section of genforum, there is at least one mention of an ancestor who immigrated from Germany.
My point is that you will OFTEN find conflicting sources as to meaning or origin for this, or other names. (that's 25+ yrs of experience, fwiw.) I have little faith in any of the "meaning" offerings, and most of all, those selling coats of arms, etc. (which is not what the first person posted.. just as explanation). I looked through a few posted files on rootsweb, that seem to trace some ancestors into Germany.
Using family surnames for first names is very traditional, which I personally like, very much. I can't vote for the "right" meaning, but it takes on a meaning or significance in it being passed down to recognize ancestry. I would encourage you strongly to research where the family actually comes from, since that may provide even a third definition.
I agree personally that it IS beautiful, of its own standing. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Wow... I don't like the meaning as a last name... I looked it up on this website...
After reading the meaning I would probably just lie and be like "It means princess..." or something lol Because It is a really pretty name... I'd like it for a little girls name!!! The meaning isn't very nice though
This website says it means "Misserable creature"

This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,
Kimmerle
probably from Kümmerle, a diminutive of Kummer ‘grief’, ‘trouble’ (see Kummer). As a name, this probably has the force of a nickname meaning ‘miserable creature’.
variant of Kimmer 3.
hope this helps.
