well, the goal is to define 'lost'.
If dad has died, the immediate record of use will be his death certificate. As long as you can show records to be his daughter, you are legally authorized to have that. If there were issues... he should be shown in the social security death index, which can prove the date of his death.
With the date and location, it seems probable to have access to his obituary (not necessarily online but possible), and maybe also records from the funeral home.
Once you have the names of HIS parents, then you would get the same, and identify who the children were. If they are still living, they are likely in www.zabasearch.com (seems to be the best I have seen, for live persons). If they are not living, they can be posted here (or other places). Yahoo does have a rule about personal info on live persons.

Here's a list of info for searches... also check cyndi's beginner section.
All of this is standard genealogy stuff... you should not need to hire private detective, unless someone is hiding on purpose. Keep in mind that it usually is not a 15 minute search.. one thing 'leads' to another and builds. Or.. sometimes, it IS a 15 minute thing. For all you know, your dad's sister has been wondering where YOU went, and all it will take is one phone call.

Generally web sites dont help. What people do if they are adopted for example is hire a private detective and they do all the work for you. It can be expensive but good luck!

You need to back track and go sideways, that is follow your direct line Parents, grandparents etc, but also sideways as in aunt uncles, great aunts and uncles etc.

Use the two sites below the first one is free to use.

Good luck and good hunting

www.myheritage.com helped me alot with family tree stuff and it's free
Merry Christmas!

Start with the living relatives who you do know how to find. Elderly aunts know a lot more than anyone appreciates. Also check out the obituaries of the deceased members of the family to see who their surviving family members are. From there, it's all creative searching. http://www.people-finders.ws and http://www.classmates.com are the best places to start.
