Question:I've come across Seckler as a profession of someone from Alsace in the 1600s but I can find a definition in French or German.

Any ideas?

Secklars (also spelled Szeklar and other variants) were ethnic Germans living in Rumania, especially the province of Transylvania, and in Hungary. The name is not indicative of any particular occupation, just ethnicity.

Alsace has been French and German on and off for the last couple of centuries.

Alsace was one of the small German states that became part of France. It is part of France today, but I understand the people there are mostly of German background even though they are fiercely loyal to France.
