Did a bit of research and the name is also commonly spelled Holzbock and Holzbog.

Historically (records available to me from the 1700's) the name/families pretty much seem to come from the Wuerttemberg area of Germany.

I would suspect that it is a geonymic (or habitational surname) related to a specific town, village, landmark, topographical feature, etc. BUT that is just my suspicion.

I went on Ancestry.com and put in Holzboog and searched immigration records. The only Holzboog's listed came from Germany.
