I had the same problem with my Irish Ancestors...Have you tried the IGI at Family search....www.familysearch.org It is free and you just might find a christening or a marriage

The Ministry of Defence will only deal with next of kin IE, spouse, eldest surviving child etc, Try the web site below he may just be mentioned here, a Medal card at least,

Good luck and good hunting

I received a very comprehensive letter from the Ministry of Defence back in 1986 when I enquired about my father's career in the Royal Navy.
I had no idea when he went in nor when he finished.
The letter gave me full details of his date of birth (which I knew) where he was born, his date of joining 7th Feb 1922 and his service number.
They also gave me details of all the ships on which he served, where they were bound and dates of voyages.
The address of the MOD at that time was
Ministry of Defence CS[R] 2a
Bourne Avenue, Hayes, Middlesex. UB3 1RF Tel: 01-573 3831 Ext. 341. The gentleman who sent me the letter was D. Roberts, for Departmental Record Officer (Archives)
