Position:Home>Genealogy> My great grandmother was 1/16 Cherokee?

Question:I just found relatives on the dawes rolls, and I wonder if I have all the birth and death records of my family if it even matters?

I found my great grandfather was type D and NR
His daughter was listed as BB 1/16

I'm not sure what this means to me?
Does anyone else?

Historically speaking, you have found what many persons would love to have, which is documentation. There are MANY MANY persons who have been told they have Cherokee background without any factual basis. Sadly, many also have no pride in their heritage, but are only wanting to enroll for the benefits that they hope to get.
Considering the percentage, I would be skeptical that you would be accepted for tribal enrollment, although Dawes rolls is a requirement.

some background on that.

Your grandmother's grandfather would be your great great grandfather. So if his daughter was 1/16, then your grandfather(or grandmother, I don't know which side this is on)would be 1/32 Cherokee, your parent on that side would be 1/64 Cherokee, and you would be 1/128 Cherokee, if they all married non-Cherokee people. Is that what you wanted to know?

I'm actually 1/16 cherokee and I would wonder what this means for me too. Are there any benefits to being 1/16 cherokee? I could see the cherokee in my grandma but I just have the square face and otherwise I look irish.
