Most of the people on

named Boich are Scots, Brits and Germans.

If your dad married a Chinese lady, Boich is now Eurasian, at least in your case.

The only way to trace your ancestors is to trace them; surnames are clues as ephemeral as morning mist. People lie, mis-spell, anglicize, marry women from across the border (or from across the ocean), move and otherwise obscure the trail for their descendants.

Yes, it shows up in several of the French and Dutch databases. It's also German. Here's the cursory overview from GeneaNet, France's major database system. You'll notice it's not even isolated to one province. It's found in several provinces and into the neighboring countries as well. After looking at the records, it appears it was originally a Low German/Dutch name that was introduced into France and Germany. So it's probably more accurate to call it a Dutch name in France...i.e. the name was Dutch, but the people were very much French.
